Welcome to WRIT 1133! Post interviews of your classmates here as a comment.

For your first blog post, please introduce the classmate you interviewed to the rest of us. Write a 250-350 profile that captures who he or she is, where he or she is from, and what he or she likes to do. You might tell us more about this person’s experiences as a writer or his or her interest in service-learning.

Whatever issues you focus on, take care with this short piece, for it is our first impression of you as a writer, as well as the first impression of the person you interviewed. Have fun with this piece—make it interesting! Use quotes, brief stories, and any other vivid details you can discover to enrich your mini-profile.

For example, if I were to interview myself and post the result, I might write something like:

Place matters to Professor Geoffrey Bateman, which is why his current research is so important to him. "I think the different regions of our country shape us in important ways," he says. “As a teacher and scholar, I'm interested in studying the literature and cultural history of places, especially the American West."

Having grown up near Portland, Oregon, his interest in the West has evolved since childhood. He grew up exploring everything from the majestic Columbia River Gorge to the misty Oregon coast; he hiked parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and hung out in the quirky urban spaces of Portland and Seattle.

These experiences may help explain his current research on the queer frontier. His dissertation explores the cultural representations of sexuality in the American West near the end of the 19th century.

"It's a particularly rich period for sexuality studies,” he observes. "Sexual identity was not nearly as cut and dried as it became in the mid to late 20th century. And when you consider how racialized identities and gender norms factor into this understanding, you have an explosion of fascinating accounts—both literary and historical.”

But his interests don’t lie solely in the past. Professor Bateman believes strongly that historical research must speak to contemporary issues, especially those that are politically charged.

“Literature and history offers us a way to rethink current problems, and for me, I think the most rewarding I can do historically is to show others how texts from the past allow us to re-imagine our lives today.”

Such engagement means that in his first-year writing courses, he tries to find meaningful ways for students to practice their writing. Ideally, he wants them to connect abstract rhetorical concepts and research methodologies with ideas and problems outside our university context.

“Ultimately,” he says, “I want students to feel confident that what they’re learning in my classroom not only prepares them for the rest of their time at DU, but also starts them on a much larger journey of being an engaged citizen for the rest of their lives.”

  1. Will Bryan grew up in the Denver area. He stayed in Denver for school and came to DU because it was "close and easy." Even though he goes to DU his life would be complete if he was able to go to UC Davis. He has no set major yet, but would like to study pre-law. He chose this so that he could have his own set schedule and would be able to do what he wants when he wants to. His mother is a paralegal so that is where he got some background on what he wants to do.

For him the idea of being a lawyer is what makes him happy. He would be his own boss and wants to help people. Having the lifestyle of a lawyer he would be able to go hiking and traveling at his pleasure.

When it comes to reading, Will enjoys Paul Theroux. The first book that he read from this author was The Mosquito Coast. He strongly dislikes poetry. He also enjoys "nonfiction like history and stuff."

One thing that Will likes to do for fun is bike racing. Over spring break he went to Boulder and Grand Junction for bike races. He has only participated in this for a year now. He has really come to enjoy it throughout this past year.

His view on homeless is that they need all the help that they can get. They all have their own background like we do so we shouldn’t judge them. People just see them out on the streets, and know nothing about them so we have no place to judge how they got there or why they are there.

When Will gets older he wants to live in California or Salida. He currently has no big travel plans, but when he was six he really enjoyed traveling to Peru. He would go back there again if he got the chance.

  3. Although she has suffered two ACL, MCL and meniscus tears, Suzanne Albright has continued with skiing, a passion of hers since the age of two. Growing up in Denver, Colorado, it is not hard to imagine a woman, who also plays lacross, having a passion for the outdoors. Suzanne Albright moved to Steamboat Springs in order to ski on the Alpine Ski Team, and has continued to ski on the DU Club Ski Team.
Suzanne always knew that she didn’t want to leave Colorado to go to school, a decision that was only proved further when she moved to Virginia in order to follow her mother’s career as an attorney for Senator John McCain’s. With her decision to stay in Colorado, her decision to come to DU was not difficult. Her mother and brother are alumni of the university, with her mother receiving a communication major and her brother receiving a degree in molecular biology. Suzanne is following in her brothers footsteps some-what, studying to major in biology and psychology with a minor in law and ethics. As of now, her ultimate dream is to go into sports medicine, with a dream to become a trainer for the Denver Broncos. She says that, “being a trainer for them would be the best job ever.” On campus, she is not only involved in the DU Club Ski Team, but she is also involved with the Club Lacrosse Team and is a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Suzanne Albright is a relaxed, laid back person with minimum amount of pet peeves and a desire to travel to the Bahamas, a well deserved vacation for a woman so highly involved in the outdoors and on the DU campus.

  4. I interviewed Georgia Wettlaufer for our first in-class writing. She was from Vail, Colorado. Her mom was from Florida and her dad was from New York. Why she came to University of Denver, instead of any other colleges in the nation, is because she loved Colorado and she doesn’t want to leave Colorado. But, she did applied colleges outside of Colorado in Eastern US. The final decision of why come to DU is because DU has very good Ski team and she is on the ski team in DU (from this we can see she loves to ski). The other reason why come to DU is that the school is close to where she was from (closer enough to get away from her house, but not too close either. The school is two hour’s drive from where she was from.) She is major in biology. She is very interested in the field of sciences, especially in sport medicine. The future plan for her was to be a doctor or something related to athletes. Her parents support her future decision of being a doctor or something related to it.
She was an experienced PHC member, she attended the PHC last year and she likes it. Her pet peeve is she hates someone eats opened-mouth, like chewing gum loudly. She likes to write, but writing is not easy for her, so she have to learn how to write better for her life and for the classes in college.

  5. Theater is something that centers in the life of DU senior Patrick Timko-Maderia. To Patrick lighting is "like painting, but your canvas is the set, air, actors, and faces." Patrick was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and lived there until he was 14 years old. He then moved to Denver on account of his mother's job where he started his high school career.

As a child, Patrick was exposed to many different sports, but took karate and figure skating to his liking most. It's not a surprise that he continued the enjoyment of the sport in high school. Patrick believes figure skating is what developed his performance aspect in life, and he took up theater heavily in his high school years. It is here that Patrick discovered how much he enjoyed the design aspect of theater, and got into lighting.

In addition to theater, Patrick has a second hobby and interest in video games. He worked for a short while at a video game retail store, and, while it being a minimum wage retail store job, he states he enjoyed working there as it involved one of the things he enjoys doing.

After his high school days, Patrick moved on to the University of Denver, where he continued his passion in lighting. "DU seemed like the best school in the state that had what I wanted to do," he says. Patrick is now a senior at DU and is looking into viable career options for his chosen path. According to Patrick, references are key in an industry such as theater, and he's doing his best to find internships and ways to make connections and meet his dream of working on Broadway. Patrick already has a swell number of accomplishments, including lighting for all of the operas at Lamont here in Denver and has also worked in all of the plays at the school. Patrick is dedicated, passionate, and ambitious about what he does and it seems likely he won't have any trouble getting to go where he wants.

  6. Gyana Bandy Gomar is freshman this year in DU. One of the reasons that she chose here is that she can stay close to her mom. She is an undeclared major now and would probably choose in between psychology and international studies since she is really interested in understanding people and knowing what is going on around the world. She lives with her mom and her younger brother and hopes to move to San Francisco after graduation as she is attracted by the arts and music there. Bandy is originally from Mexico and speaks Spanish as her first language. When asked what she liked most about Mexico, she told me that it would be the friendliness of Mexican people, the cultural richness of the country and the food! And the U.S., in her opinion, is a place of opportunities. She likes Denver for its cultural diversity. She is interested in civic engagement and service learning and likes writing that involves people. Some of her hobbies are snowboarding, dancing (different types of Latin dances), and ceramics. And Bandy hopes to do a lot of traveling around the world in the future.

  7. With a last leap, the crowd jumps to their feet. Micheal Vandahl has outscored the rival school's entire team just as the bell rings their demise. He is going to take the ball far.
Micheal is here at DU for basketball, he was recruited spring of his senior year to come play at this division one team. It is a very young team, more freshman and sophomore emphasis than any other team in the country. They have flown somewhere around 24,000 miles together going to various games and tournaments.
His basketball career kept him from going home during winter break more than two days. This constant distance from friends and family has made him realize that the hometown he once wanted desperately to escape is now a location he would love to return to and misses quite a bit. A beach on Mexico or the Virgin Islands would be lovely for a summer vacation, but really Steamboat, his home town, is also quite enjoyable in the summers.
Back in Steamboat his parents own their own independent shops. His father has two T-shirt companies, and his mom a woman's clothing store. Michael likes this self made work schedule and the entrepreneurship of his parents. He might like to do something similar a little down the road, so he is thinking about getting some sort of a business degree.
Also in Steamboat are his two little siblings. He has a little sister and brother, 15 and 11 who have finally started to become more like friends to Michael, where before they had a bond similar to any other sibling relationship.
First quarter Michael had the opportunity to visit a homeless shelter with his first year seminar. His placement into this class was somewhat random, but Michael is excited about it. "I'm always willing to help" he said, and hopefully Project Homeless Connect will provide him with that chance.
The chance to write, however, Michael would rather avoid. He much prefers reading Harry Potter than writing research papers. Aside from maybe obnoxious eating noises, Michael cannot find much more mind-numbing than writing.

  8. Matt Pauluzzi is an incredibly driven young man with the drive and ambition to truly succeed in the ever-changing world of business. With his father as inspiration, Matt has already developed his own successful business and has already set his sights on his next goal: a management position with Blizzard Entertainment, creators of the popular World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo franchises.

Matt's life began in Parkridge, IL, a humble town on the outskirts of Chicago. His competitive spirit shined from a very young age, when he started playing hockey at four. His father's work forced Matt to move all over the country every few years, from Jacksonville, FL, back to Chicago, and then over to Tucson, AZ, eventually ending up in Orange County, California.

Matt then traded in the hockey stick for a set of shoulder pads when he started high school football his Freshman year of high school. His skills as a team leader really shined, playing both Cornerback and Quarterback, but it wasn't to be. Matt's nature to always find something new forced him to give up football for lacrosse.

Well, actually, he wasn't forced: his school didn't have a lacrosse team, so he took it upon himself to create one!

His interest in sports and fitness lead to a position at Velocity Sports Performance, where he was quickly promoted to Assistant Operations Coordinator - Matt is THE GUY when it comes to turning leads into clients. Matt did very well, but craved even more. So, he built his own company from the ground up, utilizing the principles of Incentive Marketing to offer trials to different products and services to potential customers.

The website was humming, the customers were happy, but Matt needed to continue his education, and DU called his name. Matt is attending the Daniels College of Business, and hasn't even completed his first year, and is already looking at graduate schools, and eventually a management position in a major company - Blizzard would be nice :)

Matt Pauluzzi is strong, determined, self-motivated, and driven to perform: he is the person you go to when you have people to manage.

  9. Luchia Thomas

Elizabeth Luchia Thomas was born in Berkeley California but moved to Chicago in the fourth grade. She goes by Luchia because she doesn't like the shortened version "Liz" of Elizabeth.

Luchia came to Denver because of the music school and her professor Linda Wayne. " I fell in lover with her when I came and visited DU." She also really likes the community in Denver.

She is majoring in Music and plays the violin. She can play Irish folk, and Jazz. You can see her perform at the Lomont Music school with the orchestra. She also performs solos and will perform gigs in the city. When she Graduates from the University of Denver with her Music Degree she would like to start a music school for kids who are less fortunate and do not have access to music.

Luchia is active in the community. She was part of her local youth group where they went to the local soup kitchen weekly, helped with forrest restoration, and went to El Salvador on a service learning trip. One of the reasons she chose PHC is she wanted to become more active in the Denver Community.

Luchia's Mecca would be Cuba. She likes to question political systems. She says she has a "Socialist vain" in her.

Long finger nails drive her crazy because it is impossible to play the violin with long finger nails. She likes creative writing and often writes in a journal. She dislikes critical writing

  11. Zhi Gan was born in Hangzhou, China. After graduating high school, he decided that he wanted to major in International Relations with an emphasis on Chinese Japanese relations. He realized that going to a different country would probably make his learning experience more objective, so he decided to come to the University of Denver.

Although his time here has been very pleasant and he has made a lot of friends through his living and learning community, he has also had some obstacles on the way. One of his biggest challenges has been the language barrier, because he has to translate everything from Chinese to English and vice versa. It’s also been hard being so far away from his friends and family. However, he still keeps in touch through a Chinese website that, as he puts it “is very similar to facebook” and also through phone calls.

Some of Zhi’s hobbies include Tai Kwan Do, hanging out with friends, ice skating and enjoying different types of food. In addition to that, he also loves playing the cello. Because the instrument was too large to bring with him on the airplane ride from China, he was able to borrow one from the Lamont School of Music.

After Zhi is done with his studies he plans on going back to China, live with his family and to enjoy the wonderful food and culture of his home country has to offer. He wishes to one day be a diplomat for the government of China.

  12. After growing up in the small town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, you could only imagine that Avery Denney had every intention of getting out to a bigger place when it came time for her to choose a college. Although she looked mainly on this east coast, her parents’ desire for her to remain close to home and her homebody mentality eventually put her here at the University of Denver where it just seemed to be the right fit.
As a freshman here at the University of Denver, Avery began her college career as an HRTM major, but found a great disliking for it after an internship in Aspen, Colorado and a less than desired professor. Thus, today, she is an international business major, with three minors in Spanish, leadership and biology. Ideally, she would like to start an international company that sends physicians abroad to help in various situations, tying together her academic load.
However, Avery is active in other aspects of college and life. Throughout high school, Avery played both basketball and volleyball all four years. In addition, she also played soccer her sophomore year and track both her sophomore and junior years. As you can imagine, she received her fair share of injuries, including a broken nose, torn meniscus in her right knee and the need for ankle surgery.
Here at DU, Avery stays involved through her membership in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and her involvement in the PLP program, which she finds to be the most appealing aspect of DU so far, due to its community feel. You can take the girl out of a small town, but you cannot take the small town out of the girl.

  13. Lucien Daigle

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’ve only attended two schools in my life both private Catholic schools. Throughout my life I have been involved in many activities such as dancing and singing. I got really into football and baseball and really enjoyed both for a while but I quit those sports. After that I started singing during the liturgy at mass with my mother. But my musical experience at the time was not just limited to mass. I would sing mananitas tapatias for various people. While still doing that I started singing in a local choir called the Albuquerque Boy Choir and I did that for a long time until I got to the point where I could not do it because of all the other things I was involved in. For a while I was involved in doing the science fair in Albuquerque. During that time, I studied how well some of the sensors function on a small robot by putting them through a series of trials. I was very successful with that project and made it to the regional level with it. Throughout high school I always wanted to be an engineer until I was exposed to music again. It was then that I knew with no doubt where my life was headed. So I auditioned at the Lamont School of Music here at DU and that is how I ended up here. As a student here I am actively involved with Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Incorporated, the opera program, productions, and the Latino Student Alliance along with being a full time student. My goal in life is to sing in opera productions for a living.

  14. I wasn’t in class on Monday and I guess you all got to interview each other so Professor Bateman asked me to write a little bit about me so here it goes.

My name is Sonia Wilk and I was born and raised in Pinellas County, Florida. I’m 19 years old and passionate about all things Social Justice. I find that I sometimes have a problem with focusing my attention on one specific topic of interest because once you get me hooked on something its hard for me to say no and its even harder for me to stop.

Right now, my specific engagements on campus include living on the Social Justice hall, helping to plan Project Homeless Connect, Shabbat 200 and Holocaust and Genocide Awareness week. I’m very active in the Jewish community and pride myself on my Jewish heritage.

I’m a bubbly and energetic person who is passionate about the world around us and enjoys meeting new people and learning from them as well as their experiences. I strongly believe that everything in life happens for a reason and that things are meant to be. (I also acknowledge that these things aren’t necessarily clear or obvious for some time after the event may happen.)

I am fortunate enough to be one of the Resident Advisors for JMAC next year and am currently sitting on a plane coming home from lobbying in DC the past 4 days on behalf of advocating for a comprehensive sexuality education on a federal level.

Besides that I’m not too sure what else to tell you. I look forward to being able to take a writing class with people who are mutually passionate/interested in helping with the homelessness issue in Colorado.
I think for the most part that about sums me up as best as I can in over 250 words and I will see you all tomorrow!
