As we start class today, take five minutes and tell the rest of us what book you found in the library over the weekend. What’s the title and who’s the author? Who published this book? Do you think it’s a scholarly source, or is it from a more popular press?
Also, give us a quick update on what you think you’ll write your first paper about. What do you think your primary text will be? If you haven’t found one yet, what texts are you thinking about writing about? Or, what issue are you interested in pursuing?

ReplyDeleteThe title of the book I found over the weekend was “Where Have All The Homeless Gone? The Making and Unmaking of a Crisis” by Anthony Marcus. Published by Berghahn Books. I think it is a scholarly source because the book talk about poverty, race, homeless, and social difference. The book would give lot of information about the homelessness.
ReplyDeleteI think I would write my first paper about either the character Ragged Dick or the film “Pursuit of Happyness.”
Over this past weekend I went out and picked up Homelessness in America: A Forced Marched to Nowhere by Mary Ellen Hombs and Mitch Snyder. This was published by the Community for Creative Non-Violence. I view this more as a scholarly source of information as I chose the book because of the wide range of topics it covers. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to write about yet, thus I found this book fit to hopefully fulfill any needs I have for information on the history of homelessness, as I'm leaning towards writing on Ragged Dick.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I was extremely busy this past weekend and didn't get a chance to think over what I will be writing about for this assignment. I am pretty certain, however, that I will be using Ragged Dick as my primary text as I very much enjoyed the book and should enjoy writing about that text. Other than that, hopefully I can get more time this week to sit down and think about what it is I will choose to write on.
My book is "Homeless Families With Children" by Namkee G. Choi and Lidia J. Snyder published by Springer Publishing Company. I believe it's a scholarly source because its writers are both MSW and Namkee has a Ph.D.
ReplyDeleteI believe my first paper will be about homeless families. The primary text might be this book that I found in the library, however, I might end up chosing another subject. I'm interested in poverty and homelessness in third world countries, but I'm not sure if that would be something we could write about or not. However, I'm really interested in families that live in poverty, because I think that having to take care of many individuals (especially if they have children) would be very rough if you don't have a home to go back to.
While I was reading Ragged Dick, he mentioned in in his long line of careers, being a match boy. This brought up an old memory of mine of this picture book I read as a child- The Little Match Girl. It was a Hans Christian Anderson story about a girl who is desperately trying to make it through the winter, without friends or family, just the small warmth of her matches. Her story is the exact opposite of Dicks, good fortune does not just naturally fall into her lap.
ReplyDeleteI thought I would compare these opposing texts. They are both written for a similar audience, and in the same century at least, but I want to look at the differences that would bring about such contrasting statements.
The book I am using from the library is: The stories of Hans Christian Andersen : a new translation from the Danish / selected and translated by Diana Crone Frank and Jeffrey Frank ; with illustrations by Vilhelm Pedersen and Lorenz Frølich. Published by: Duke University Press, 2005.
This is not a scholarly source. It is my primary document, a children's story.
For my paper, I am using the film Basketball Diaries as my primary text. With this text, I will be analyzing the role of drugs in youth homelessness. For support, I am using the book Working With Young Homeless People by Phil Robinson. The book, which is written as an aid to anybody in a position to help homeless youth, goes in depth into the reasons why youth are on the streets. Included is an entire chapter on substance misuse. The book is published by Jessica Kingsley Publishing. This book is a very trustworthy source. All his references are documented and in the introduction his explains how this book came from his thesis paper he wrote when acquiring his Phd. Robinson has 35+ years experience in social work.
ReplyDeleteThe American Myth of Success by Richard Weiss. This book was published by Basic Books, Inc. I think this book is a scholarly source because the author uses many sources to support his thesis. His thesis has to do with Horatio Alger and Norman Vincent Peale making creating the myth that american success is easier to come by.
ReplyDeleteI think that I will write my paper on how Horatio Alger creates this idea that success is easier to come by then it really is in life. I will use Ragged Dick, probably the book stated above and some other sources that state statistics of homelessness and how many people actually recover from such a state. However through other research my ideas may change as new ideas or sources present themselves.
I'd like to write my paper and further research the idea behind why people become homeless. There are some stigmas in today's society that people are homeless because they are lazy and do not want to take the time and effort to find a job and a good home. However, I know from meeting some homeless people first hand that many times that is not the case. I want to delve into possible reasons for homelessness by possibly using different senarios from Ragged Dick to further explain my ideas.

ReplyDeleteWhat I think I will write my first paper about is the issue of homelessness and how it can be possible to help the homeless get out of the situation that they are in. Because it may be possible in some way to help them do something for themselves. I'm not quite sure what my primary text will be but it will definitely include the issue mentioned above.
ReplyDeleteThe book is called Seasons Such As These: How Homelessness Took Shape in America by Cynthia J. Bogard. It was published by Aldine De Gruyter, which was a New York based company. This book is more a scholarly source as it deals with the emergence of homelessness and how public policies should be advanced to better meet the needs of homeless people. It also contains demographic information of the homeless in America, showing how serious the problem is and asking for more public attention.
ReplyDeleteI think my primary text would be Ragged Dick. And I’d would to dig a little bit into the social background of the story and analyze how it came to shape the character of our hero Dick.
In my view, homeless people are the people who had been forgotten by our society. I found a documentary movie over the weekend that called “Dark Days”, the film follows a group of people living in an abandoned section of the New York City underground railway system, more precisely the area of the so called Freedom Tunnel. The movie directed by Marc Singer, he had stayed with these homeless people for number of months. He turned the point to the society system problem, but not discriminations. I am going to write something about the people’s life of been homeless, and their positions in this society.
ReplyDeleteThe book I found from the library is called Homelessness in America. It was edited by Jim Bamohl, but contains many different authors throughout. Orynx Press published the book. It contains information from the definition and cause of homelessness to all types of responses and feedback to homelessness.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the paper, I am interested in looking into writing on how one tends to improve their situation. I think it would be neat to connect "Ragged Dick" and the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness." I think it would an interesting topic to pursue, and I believe it to be a fundamental question that people ask when dealing with homelessness. Do we need to help others succeed or do they need to help themselves?
I still have to find a text because I spaced going to the library over the weekend but I am interested doing my piece on poverty. I wouldn't mind doing it on poverty in another country. I have seen and experienced poverty in Mexico and I would like to learn more about it. I would like to learn more about families and poverty. Instead of just caring for themselves the parents have to care for their children. How do they give their children the best opportunities? I was want to research how people come out of poverty. How do they get a good job and get ahead in life?
ReplyDeleteThe book I found at the library is "Transitions Through Homelessness: Lives on the Edge" by Carol McNaughton. This book is published by Palgrave Macmillan. I believe that this is a scholarly source because she did research and studied other peoples lives to get the basic information for this book.
ReplyDeleteFor my paper, I am going to use "Ragged Dick" as my primary source. The topic that I most likely pursue is the transition through homelessness and getting through it.
The book I found that I’m going to use I actually found after meeting seperaetly with proff. Bateman. I sadly don’t remember the specifics about the book because its not with me at the moment but it was the first book in that style that I had ever really looked at.
ReplyDeleteIm writing my first paper using photographs as my primary sources. I want to do an analysis of these beautiful works of art that say something different to everyone. I want to know why the person in the picture is allowing the photographer to take the photo that way and I want to know why the photographer choose that angle to portray homelessness.
The book im using worked with Tipper Gore and is filled with black and white images of people who are homeless and if any information about the photo is included, it is a small blurb.
